Social media is an integral part of digital marketing, giving businesses direct access to a community of users who are interested in their products or services. To properly engage with this audience and maximize the potential of these platforms, digital marketers need a strong background in Social Media Advertising.
At Cumberland College, you can learn to build real campaigns on popular social media platforms—defining target audiences, managing budgets, and optimizing campaigns. Jonathan Mediati, your Social Media Advertising instructor, will help you develop in-demand skills that prepare you for the workforce. Driven by his motivation to share his knowledge and experience, Jonathan is focused on “helping the students grow to the potential that they can.”
In our interview, Jonathan shares key tips for those considering a future in digital marketing and social media advertising!
Don’t be Afraid to Make Mistakes and Use them as a Learning Opportunity
Social media advertising is a great way to introduce students to the world of digital marketing. Students in this class learn about how their data is collected and how it can be utilized to create effective marketing campaigns. In this way, learning becomes an exploration where students are encouraged to try new platforms, make mistakes, and learn from them under the guidance of expert instructors.
To Jonathan, trying new features and different platforms is the most important piece of advice. He adds, “Do not be shy to utilize a platform and click some options. There’s no way you can break it, and that’s how you’re going to be able to learn.”
Explore the Material before Starting Your Social Media Advertising Courses
The Cumberland learning experience is hands-on, allowing students to work on real projects with industry-standard tools. “Here at Cumberland College, we tend to use a lot of Google products,” Jonathan says. For this reason, he recommends that students set up a Gmail account and get familiarized with Google’s main products.
Those wanting to get a head-start on their education can also explore other resources. “Any type of information that is available online could be a great learning experience prior to the class starting,” Jonathan says. He lists Facebook Blueprint and the HubSpot Academy as potential resources that can help students better prepare for their social media advertising courses.
Prioritize Your Personas and Create Tailored Messaging with a Call to Action
Successful digital marketing and advertising strategies rely on research to effectively target the right audience. “I think the first thing you need to do for any advertising strategy is to create your personas,” Jonathan emphasizes. “Once you’ve created your personas, that’s when you’re going to be able to create different types of audiences in your system.”
The research and effort that goes into this step can help you create content and other marketing materials that resonate with your target audience. This is where Jonathan’s next tip comes in: “Make sure that you end up creating a visual or content that is attractive for users all while connecting that to your call to action.”
Test Your Advertising Strategies and Optimize for Maximum Results
Optimization is necessary in order to improve digital marketing efforts. “You need to test your advertising strategies and see what type of results are coming in. Adjustments and optimizations are all part of the science that comes with it,” Jonathan advises.
Testing your strategies allows you to discover ways to improve your work. Students taking social media courses learn how to efficiently review ad performance and measure the return on investment (ROI). By learning these skills, they can optimize campaigns to drive better results.
Embrace the Unknown and Rely On Mentors to Support Your Learning Journey
Starting a new program and learning new material can be intimidating to some. However, Jonathan views it as a valuable experience. “I think it’s important to try it out, see how that works, see if we’re able to support you in your career path,” He says.
At Cumberland College, students are encouraged to view instructors as mentors. “Someone that can help you in your own personal career, that could give you valuable advice that would allow you to make the right decision or make that right call that can change your life forever,” Jonathan describes. By relying on mentor support and embracing their new program, students can develop the skills they need to advance their career and explore an exciting new future!
